Question Nos. 168–172 : Read the following passage carefully and answer the ques tions given below in the context of the passage : . Most of the articles of everyday use are mass produced. The buttons on your coat, your shoe-laces, pens, pencils and exercise books are all good and cheap because they are mass produced. Cigarettes, to which most men and many women are willing slaves, are manufac tured and sold by the million. Tobacco and paper are put into one part of a machine and endless cigarettes emerge at another. The long rolls of papercovered tobacco are cut up into the right lengths and a moving belt carries them away. Another machine counts the cigarettes and packs them into boxes. From the time when the tobacco is put into the machine until the purchaser opens the box, no hand touches the cigarettes. Another example of mass production is the morning newspaper. To see huge printing presses turning out and folding tens of thousands of newspapers, all exactly the same and all faultless, is an experience which can never be forgotten. The printing press is one of man's cleverest inventions. The great machine seems almost alive; it does everything to the newspa per except write the original copy. It is this machine that brings the daily newspaper, with its pictures and its thousands of words, within the reach of the poorest of men. The output of goods in large quantities profoundly affects the standard of living of the people of the world. The main duty of statesmen is to work for the welfare of their fellow country men. Their efforts should be directed to improve the living conditions of the people, their housing, their clothing, their food and their wages. There is no reason why the standard of living should not rise continuously. America is the place where the standard of living of ordinary people is the highest in the world. A high standard of living means high consumption of goods by the ordinary people, good housing and clothing, sufficient leisure to enjoy life. To many countries, before the last disastrous war brought peaceful progress to a stand still, improvement in all these matters was continuous. For this rise in the standard of living, mass production was in large measure responsible. Yet, today vast areas of the world are stricken with poverty. Countless millions are crying out for goods which they cannot buy, either because they are not available at all, or because they are to dear. The method of mass production scientifically applied will, it is hoped, change this state of affairs and gradually improve the conditions of the people of the world. Question No 169. Choose the most appropriate statement. |

Direction for Question Nos. 149 to 153 : Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. Mohan Lal was a sprightly 22 when Hell descended near his home. A resident of a locality adjacent to the infamous Union Carbide factory, he was sleeping when his four-year old son woke him. Tears were streaming down the boy's eyes, but he wasn't crying. Bleary eyed, he glanced at the clock: it was a little past midnight. It was then that he smelt a strange smell. Could an LPG cylinder have leaked somewhere? Seeing his son desperately rub his eyes, and break out into a wracking cough got him worried. Something was clearly wrong. It was only when his wife, son and he dashed outside that reality dawned. Poisonous gas had leaked from one of the storage tanks inside the factory. It was 42 tons of methyl isocynate (MIC). Within 20 minutes at the most, the damage was done. That fateful night of December 2-3 twenty years ago wrecked his life, that of his family's and of hundreds of others. A frequent visitor at the office of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sanghatan (which has been fighting for the rights of sufferers), Mohan Lal used to run a lucrative business selling garam masala. It fetched him nearly Rs. 5,000/- every month. He also owned three tenements. Today the better part of his month (20 out of 30 days) is spend in a hospital. He can't work anymore. Even the slightest exertion makes him breathless. An asthma attack can come any time. Treatment gives only temporary relief. So who runs the family? His wife (who is also partially affected) earns a couple of hundred rupees. The elder boy has a job at a bangle shop, and the younger, barely 12 runs errands at a tea shop. Two of the three houses he owned were sold to meet family expenses. But this could not prevent him from piling up debts of nearly Rs. 90,000/- over the years. He knows he can never return this money. As against this, Rs. 25,000/- is all the compensation he has received till date. And that too way back in 1995. He appealed twice, once to the Lok Adalat, and then to the Kalyan Ayog, over the poor handout. Both appeals were rejected on the plea that they were time-barred. But wasn't some help on its way again with the Supreme Court order to disburse the sum lying in its custody? It won't make much difference since another instalment of Rs. 25,000/ is the maximum that he will get, in keeping with the agreed norms. So how does Mohan Lal plan to live out the rest of his life ? “God only knows!" comes the plaintive reply. 149. Select the proper alternative : |

| C. | The Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sanghatana |
| D. | MIC |

Direction for Question Nos. 154 to 158 : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below in the context of the passage. Man was created to live a healthy, happy and meaningful life. Inspite of man's achieve ments in art, in science and technology, in philosophy, he continues to succumb all too readily to those forces that contribute to death and decay. As illnesses associated with poverty and illiteracy are reduced, those associated with affluence and education are on the increase as illnesses of the body are increasingly subdued, those of the mind pose an ever increasing threat. Never should we forget that, however illusive health may seem to be, illness is an abnor mal condition. There are millions of adults and children in our world who have been ill and deprived for so much of their lives that they have come to regard these things as normal. To them there is no other way to live. It is true that there are many factors that affect our health over which we have little or no control at all: our genetic make-up, pre-disposition to certain conditions, the circumstances of our birth and others. Yet it should be affirmed that our condition is largely determined by our beliefs and consistent actions or the lack of such things. Whether or not we can adapt to the changing world within us and that around us is an important determinant of our health. Health is not a static condition, but it is the appropriate adaptation of the whole man to the total environment. It is only when we have clearly understood what stuff life is made of and we relate ourselves, intelligently, wisely and willingly to the fundamental realities of our exist ence that we can begin to enjoy total health and find life to be meaningful. The first reality is the unity of man himself. While man may be thought of as multidimen sional, he must be understood to function as a unit. We often find it necessary to refer to man in terms of body, mind and spirit, yet he is not three in one but simply one man. Body is the physical structure of man, with all its complex organs and systems including the brain and nerves, which may be visible, palpable and directly amenable to physiological and biochemical laws. Mind consists of those faculties which are believed to be direct result of the activity of the brain. Though impalpable and invisible, they are recognizable in the attitude and behaviour of an individual. These include memory, reason, understanding, discrimination, emotion and will. Together they function to produce intelligence. Spirit means those values, qualities and purposes which invest human life with significance and deepest meaning. These have to do with conscience, morality, faith and the reality of God, worship. perception of religious truth, a certain quality of life, and a sense of destiny. These lift man above the savage and the brute and make him capable of creative fellowship with God. What we know as man is the sum total of the action and interaction of all these dimensions. The mind is dependant upon the mind and has no existence apart from it. The converse is also true. The relation is always one of the harmonious interrelationships and interdependence. Illness may have its primary source in any one of these are so inseparable, the illness soon spreads to the whole person thus affecting each dimension of man to a greater or lesser degree. 158.Which one of the following is closest to the opposite in meaning of the word “savage” as used in the passage ? |
| A. | civilized |
| B. | brutal |
| C. | primitive |
| D. | structural |

Read the following passage carefully and answer the following questions (185 189) on it. It is perhaps no accident that many of the outstanding figures of the past were excep tionally versatile men. Right up until comparatively recent times, it was possible for an intelli gent person to acquaint himself with almost every branch of knowledge. Thus men of genius like Leonardo da Vinci or Philip Sidney, engaged in many careers at once as a matter of course. Da Vinci was so busy with his generous inventions, that he barely found the time to complete his paintings. Sidney, who died in battle when he was only thirty-two years old was not only a great soldier, but a brilliant scholar and poet as well. Both these men came very near to fulfilling the Renaissance ideal of the ‘universal man’, the man who was proficient at everything. Today we rarely hear that a musician has just invented a new type of submarine. Knowl edge has become divided and sub-divided into countless narrowly defined compartments. menecialist is venerated. The versatile person, far from being admired, is more onene Waded with suspicion. The modern world is a world of highly-skilled 'experts' who have hide to devote the greater part of their lives to a very limited field of study in order to compare with their fellows. With this high degree of specialization, the frontiers of knowledge are steadily bens nushed back more rapidly than ever before. But this has not been achieved without considera able cost. The scientist, who outside his own particular subject is little more than a moron, is a modern phenomenon as is the man of letters who is barely aware of the tremendous strides that have been made in technology. Similarly, specialization has indirectly affected quite ordi nary people in every walk of life. Many activities which were once pursued for their own coke are often given up in despair; they require techniques, the experts tell us, which lanca lifetime to master. Why learn to play piano, when you can listen to the world's greatest pianist in your own drawing room? Little by little, we are becoming more and more isolated from each other. It is almos impossible to talk to your neighbour about his job, even if he is engaged in roughly the same work as you are. The Royal Society in Britain includes, among its members only the most eminent scientists in the country. Yet it is highly disconcerting to find that even here, as one of its fellows puts it, at a lecture only 10 per cent of the members can't understand 50 per cent of what is being said. 189- . The meaning of the word “eminent' is |
| A. | mature |
| B. | skilful |
| C. | famous and respected |

Question No. 196 to 200 : Of all forms of symbolism, language is the most highly developed, most subtle, and most complicated. It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything. Now human beings have agreed, in the course of centuries of mutual dependency, to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for specified happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language. For example, we who speak English have been so trained that, when our nervous systems register the presence of a certain kind of animal, we may make the following noise : 'There's a cat.' Anyone hearing us expects to find that, by looking in the same direction, he will experience a similar event in his nervous system-one that will lead him to make an almost identical noise. Again, we have been so trained that when we are conscious of wanting food we make the noise 'I'm hungry.' There is, as has been said, no necessary connection between the symbol and that which is symbolized. Just as men can wear yachting costumes without ever having been near a yacht, so they can make the noise, 'I'm hungry', without being hungry. Furthermore, just as social rank can be symbolized by feathers in the hair, by tattooing on the breast, by gold ornaments on the watch chain, or by a thousand different devices according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in : 'J'ai faim', or 'Es hungert mich', or 'Ho appetito', or 'Hara ga hetta', and so on. However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and things symbolized are independent of each other : nevertheless, we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there is the vague sense we all have that foreign languages are inherently absurd : foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can't they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have said : 'Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals', they feel that the symbol is inherently connected in some way with the things symbolized. Then there are the people who feel that since snakes are 'nasty, slimy creatures' (incidentally, snakes are not slimy), the word 'snake' is a nasty, slimy word.200. | A. | stare |
| B. | start |
