It means that the light is becoming slower at the rate of 2.42 at passing through the diamond
It means,Speed of light in air =speed of light in diamond ×2.42i.e. something is multiplied to the speed of light in diamond to become equal to the speed of light in air.Therefore speed of light in diamond is lesser than speed of light in air. Hence the diamond is denser than air. If we incidents a ray from air to diamond the refractive ray will bend towards the normal of that point.

`2.42 = (3 xx 10^(8) m//s)/v ” ” v = (3 xx 10^(8))/(2.42) m//s = 1.24 xx 10^(8) m//s`.
This is the speed of light in diamond.
