Smith and Carlos tried to draw international attention to racial discrimination in the Olympics at Mexico City, USA in 1968 by wearing black socks with no shoes(to symbolise American Poverty) and black gloves with clenched fists and bowed heads to symbolise Black Power. The silver medallist, white Australian athlete Peter Norman, wore a human rights badge on his shirt during the ceremony to show his support to the two African-Americans.
