i) The Scholars’ Revolt occurred in 1868.(ii) This revolt was led by officials at the imperial court.(iii) These officials were angered by the spread of Catholicism and French powerin Vietnam.(iv) They led a general uprising in Ngu Au and Ha Tien provinces where over athousand Catholics were killed.(v) Catholic missionaries had been active in winning converts since the earlyseventeenth century and by the middle of the eighteenth century hadconverted some 300,000.(vi) The French crushed the movement.
