The smallpox vaccine, introduced by\xa0Edward Jenner\xa0in 1796, was the first successful vaccine to be developed. He observed that milkmaids who previously had caught cowpox did not catch smallpox and showed that inoculated vaccinia protected against inoculated variola virus.\xa0On May 14, 1796,\xa0Jenner\xa0took fluid from a cowpox blister and scratched it into the skin of James Phipps, an eight-year-old boy. A single blister rose up on the spot, but James soon recovered. On July 1,\xa0Jenner\xa0inoculated the boy again, this time with\xa0smallpox\xa0matter, and no disease developed.\xa0
