The hydocarbons in which atleast one double or triple bond is present alongwith single bonds are called unsaturated compounds. They are divided into 2 classes: alkenes or olefins and alkynes.
The hydrocarbons in which all the carbon atoms are linked by only single covalent bonds are saturated hydocarbons. The general formula for these compounds is CnH2n+2 where n= no. of carbon atoms in one molecule of a hydrocarbon.
