Grid is a word

Grid is a system of imaginary lines drawn on the surface of the earth such that a number of vertical straight lines cross some horizontal lines to form squares.(The vertical lines are called meridians of longitude and the horizontal lines are called parallels of latitude).The grid system is very important for locating a place exactly at the correct place in a map.The grid also helps us to know and understand the position of a place accurately with respect to the longitudes and latitudes drawn (imaginarily) on the surface of the earth or globe.
