The narrator had made up his mind to send the dealer ten pounds. But the chain of his thoughts continued. He thought that if he sent the dealer ten pounds, he would form a wrong idea of his customers and that he would expect similar letters every day. But others might not be as fair and sporting as the narrator and so the dealer would become embittered and would weep bitterly. He further thought that it would be a crime to injure such a good-natured man. Ultimately he came to the conclusion that it was absurd to send him ten pounds. The amount would put him above himself and so five pounds would be plenty. In fact, this episode is enough to clarify that the narrator goes on reconsidering and changing his opinion directed by his selfish motive. 

वर्णनकर्ता व्यापारी को दस पाउन्ड भेजने का निश्चय कर चुका था। किन्तु उसकी विचार- शृंखला जारी रही। उसने विचार किया कि यदि वह व्यापारी के लिए दस पाउन्ड भेज देगा तो वह अपने ग्राहकों के विषय में गलत विचार बना लेगा और यह कि वह प्रतिदिन इसी प्रकार के पत्रों की अपेक्षा करेगा। किन्तु अन्य लोग वर्णनकर्ता की भाँति ही ईमानदार नहीं हो सकते हैं और इस तरह व्यापारी कटु हो जाएगा और बुरी तरह रोएगा। उसने आगे सोचा कि ऐसे अच्छे स्वभाव के व्यक्ति को आहत करना अपराध होगा। अन्ततः वह इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचा कि व्यापारी के लिए दस पाउन्ड भेजना बेतुकी बात होगी। इस राशि से उसका सिर चढ़ जाएगा और इसलिए पाँच पाउन्ड ही बहुत होंगे। वास्तव में यह घटनाक्रम यह स्पष्ट करने के लिए पर्याप्त है कि वर्णनकर्ता अपने स्वार्थपूर्ण. इरादे से निर्देशित होकर अपने विचार पर लगातार पुनर्विचार करता है और उसे बदलता रहता है।
