Consider a binary solution containing a nonvolatile solute. If P and P are vapour pressures of a pure solvent and the solution respectively then, Lowering of vapour pressure = ΔP = P0 – P
Relative lowering of vapour pressure = \(\frac{P_0-P}{P_0}\)
By Raoult’s law,
\(\frac{P_0-P}{P_0}\) = x2
Where x2 is mole fraction of the solute. Therefore the relative lowering of vapour pressure is a colligative property.
