One of the most revolutionary social reforms of the\xa0Jacobin period was the abolition of slavery in the\xa0French colonies. The colonies in the Caribbean-Martinique,\xa0Guadeloupe and San Domingo- were important\xa0suppliers of commodities such as\xa0tobacco, indigo, sugar\xa0and coffee.\xa0But when the shortage of labour on the plantation\xa0was seen,\xa0it encouraged the triangular slave trading\xa0between Europe, Africa and the Americas in\xa0the seventeenth century, French merchants bought the\xa0slaves from local chieftains from ports like Nantes\xa0or Bordeaux or African coast. Then, they were sold\xa0to plantation owners. However, slavery was not criticised largely\xa0throughout the eighteenth century. The National\xa0Assembly held long debates about the rights of\xa0man but fearing opposition from businessmen it\xa0did not pass any laws to abolish the slave trade.\xa0In 1794, the Convention Legislated to tree all\xa0slaves in the\xa0French overseas possessions but it\xa0lasted for a short term. After ten years, slavery was\xa0reintroduced by Napoleon. It was finally abolished\xa0[n 1848 in French colonies.
