Elections are held regularly to local parliamentary bodies every five years. Electoral constituencies at local level are called wards from which the panchayat members or panch (in rural areas) and municipal councillors (in urban areas) are elected. They, then select the panchayat president or sarpanch, and municipal chairperson or mayor respectively.
