The muslims gave a lukewarm response to the civil disobedience movement because:\tAfter the decline of non cooperation khilafat movement, a large section of Muslims felt alienated from the Congress.\tFrom the mid 1920s the congress came to be more associated with Hindu religious nationalist groups like Hindu mahasabha.\tAs relations between Hindus and muslims worsened, each community organised religious procession with militant fervour provoking hindu-muslim communal clashes and riots in various cities.
