The prothallus is the fern gametophyte. It is a green, photosynthetic structure that is one cell thick, usually\xa0heart\xa0or kidney shaped, 3–10 mm long and 2–8 mm broad.\xa0A\xa0prothallus, or\xa0prothallium, is usually the gametophyte stage in the life of a\xa0fern\xa0or other pteridophyte. Occasionally the term is also used to describe the young gametophyte of a liverwort or peat moss as well.\xa0
