Breakdown of glucose to pyruvic acid inside the cytosol of living cells is called glycolysis whereas incomplete breakdown of glucose into ethyl alcohol and `CO_(2)` or into lactic acid by prokaryotes and unicellular eukaryotes is called fermentation. The glycolysis occurs inside the cells whereas fermentation occurs outside the cells.
