अलंकार का अर्थ है भूषण, भूषित करना जिस प्रकार ऐक स्त्री अपने आप को सजाने मतलब भूषित करने के लिए कान में कुंडल, नाक में नथुने तथा गले में हार से अपने आप को भूषित करती है उसी प्रकार शब्दों द्वारा वाक्य में चमत्कार उत्पन करना अलंकार कहलाता है
अलंकार का अर्थ है – आभूषण।
